What is a programmable thermostat, you ask? A programmable thermostat allows you to pre-set the temperatures at which you want your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system to turn on and off, based on the current temperature in your home. Here are 5 things you as a homeowner should know about a programmable thermostat and what it can do for you.

1. Programmable thermostat features

Most programmable thermostats come with four pre-programmed settings. Additional features may include a digital backlit display, touch-pad screen, hold/vacation options, voice programming and an alert to let you know when it’s time to change the air conditioning system filter.

2. How to install a programmable thermostat

First, read the instructions that come with the thermostat very carefully. It’s recommended that you install your programmable thermostat on an interior wall, away from heating or cooling vents and other sources of heat or drafts such as doorways, windows, skylights, direct sunlight or bright lamps. 3. The best temperature setting for a programmable thermostat

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers recommendations for temperature settings. In early morning, set the air conditioning to 78 degrees for cooling in warm weather (70 degrees for heating in cool weather). Increase air conditioning temperature by seven degrees mid-morning; set back the heat by eight degrees. Go back to the 78 degrees cool/70 degrees heat at dinner time and then for sleeping hours, increase air conditioning once again by seven and heating by eight degrees.

According to the EPA, the average household spends more than $2,000 a year on energy bills, half of which goes to heating and cooling. The EPA estimates that homeowners can save about $180 a year by properly setting their programmable thermostats and maintaining those settings. Also, programmable thermostats are more accurate and will maximize the efficiency of your Phoenix air conditioning and heating system.

5. Where to buy a programmable thermostat

Programmable thermostats can be purchased at most home improvement stores. There are three models to choose from. The 7-day model is designed for those whose daily schedule tends to change day-to-day. The 7-day model offers the most flexibility. The 5+2-day model follows the same schedule every weekday and a different schedule for weekends. The 5-1-1 model is for those who have the same weekday schedule but then a different schedule on Saturday and a different schedule on Sunday.
